Meet The A Capella All Stars – Pentatonix

While enjoying my stay at the best vacation home (check out http://www.thebestvacationhomes.com), the music of the Pentatonix fills the whole place with a capella. This group is great, I thought. I went on watching and listening to almost all their music covers in YouTube. Intrigued, I made more digging about this awesome group.

The Beginning of Pentatonix

Scott Hoying, a self-proclaimed choir nerd grew to become captivated with a capella throughout his university years. In the year 2011, he brought together his friends from childhood – Kirstie Maldonado and Mitch Grassi to sign up for the musical contest The Sing-Off.

The TV show required to have a minimum of five individuals to form a group, so the trio looked for 2 more people. A buddy introduced bass vocalist Avi Kaplan. At a later time, they found Kevin Olusola from YouTube. They knew at an instant that he is the missing key. The group clicked the first time they met which was a day before the audition. With their great voices, beats, and the blend of notes, they were able to win the crown.

Pentatonix First Audition – The Sing Offs

They continued to perform on the The Sing-Off in China. Locals were amazed by Kaplan’s overtone singing and Olusola’s smooth Mandarin.

Their triumph gained them a record deal, but soon they were dropped off their brand. They were not undaunted but instead carried on uploading a cappella covers as well as medleys on to YouTube.

“Winning really solidified in our minds that this is something special and we could make a name for ourselves in the music industry, as many ‘no’s as we got, we just kept pushing forward.” — Grassi / Pentatonix

Their perseverance paid back. Sooner they launched their 4th EP PTX Volume III. After that, on Christmas Eve, their very own 2nd holiday recording that went platinum.

“[A cappella music] is a lot more organic and different than just the processed stuff you hear on the radio these days. We do a lot of different styles. I think all different types of music can make people happy, and that’s what we like to do in Pentatonix.”

Their choice of music and the way their voices come into a harmonious blend brought them success over the years.
