Thanksgiving in Norfolk Island
Norfolk island holidays, their celebration of Thanksgiving is huge and brings splendid joy. The local people celebrate this distinctive event as a general public holiday. Although to them, the event happens every last Wednesday of November, instead of the last Thursday that the United States follow.
This Thanksgiving celebration started in the mid-1890s, mostly as a result of an American trader – Isaac Robinson. He decided to settle on the island and introduced the locals to Thanksgiving for the very first time. He also introduced the cornbread as well as the pumpkin pie which it is reputed for, prior to his death at the sea the next year. The locals honored his memory by carrying out the tradition the following year and it had been followed since then. Recently around the 1960s it had been the American whalers centered at the island’s whaling business of the time who further more paved the tradition.
